A Glasgow university student who was struck by a car outside the campus has died.

The 24-year-old was struck by a car at a crossing on University Avenue around 5.25pm on Tuesday.

She was assisted by university staff and members of the public before emergency services arrived.

She was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where she was fighting for her life.

Police Scotland announced that she passed away in hospital on Thursday.

A full report will be forwarded to the Procurator Fiscal.

The 24-year-old student suffered a head injury after hit by a Ford Fiesta while crossing University Avenue near to its junction with Southpark Avenue.

The car was being driven eastbound by a 42-year-old man.

Members of the public, including medical students from the University of Glasgow, assisted the woman until emergency services arrived.

Sergeant Nicola Taylor from the Divisional Road Policing Unit based at Helen Street is re-appealing for any witnesses to the crash to contact her office through 101 quoting reference number 2733 of 17th April 2017.

A spokeswoman for the University of Glasgow posted after the accident: "We are deeply saddened that one of our students was injured in a road traffic accident last night on University Avenue close to the Main Gate.

"Our own security team and the emergency services were with her almost instantly and she is now receiving treatment at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. We are also grateful to the staff and students who immediately rushed to help last night before emergency services arrived.
