STUDENTS in Glasgow battling financial hardship are to benefit from a £60,000 funding pot from the group that saved the Lanarkshire Tata Steel plants from closure.

Glasgow Caledonian University has been chosen as one of the first UK universities to benefit from a STEM scholarship programme for school and college leavers, alongside Cambridge University.

Twelve engineering students will receive £1250 every year throughout their studies from the Gupta Family Group Foundation, founded by Sanjeev and Nicola Gupta in 2017, as well as access to a trained mentor.

One of Mr Gupta's companies, Liberty House, saved the Clydebridge and Dalzell steel plants in Lanarkshire from closure after buying them from Tata Steel in 2016.

Jillian Watt, Director GCU Foundation, said: “Their focus on helping young people to reach their full potential by boosting skills and employability is a commitment we share.”
