HEART charity leaders have pledged to work with every council in Scotland to deliver mandatory CPR lessons in schools.

It comes after Aberdeen City Council joined Glasgow in its promise to train all secondary pupils in the life-saving skill.

The Evening Times is campaigning for a roll-out of training to every school in Scotland, supported by British Heart Foundation Scotland.

David McColgan, head of policy for BHF Scotland said: “Today’s announcement by Aberdeen City Council is warmly welcomed. By committing to work towards a systematic and sustainable model to ensure all pupils are trained in CPR before leaving school they are showing great leadership and vision for Scotland’s local authorities.

“This past week has seen Glasgow City Council, the first local authority in the UK to make a commitment to ensure all pupils are trained in CPR, and now Aberdeen City Council put themselves at the forefront in the fight against poor survival rates for out of hospital cardiac arrest.

“Their decisions will no doubt create cities of lifesavers, however their determination and bravery should be an example for the remaining 30 local authorities in Scotland to join this movement and deliver a nation of lifesavers for generations to come.

“British Heart Foundation Scotland is ready to work with any, and all, local authorities who want to better understand current provision and how they can join Glasgow and Aberdeen as global leaders in CPR training.”
