A COUNCILLOR is calling on greater cleansing services in Govanhill following a public meeting recently.

Bailie Soryia Siddique has written to Glasgow City Council about the overflowing bins in the highly populated area.

Held by the community council, the meeting last week saw a “bigger than expected” attendance and “passionate” views aired.

More cleansing services to tackle general poor conditions in closes and fly tipping is being demanded from campaigners.

“There was a lot of anger and complaints about a lack of routine cleansing services, fly tipping and lack of enforcement,” said Ms Siddique.

A Land and Environmental Services (LES) cleansing manager who covers Govanhill, Brian Roberts, was on hand to take questions.

Councillors Siddique, Alexander Belic and Mhairi Hunter also took questions from the audience.

Ms Siddique criticised the council for “only” sending one officer from Land and Environmental Services (LES).

In her letter, she suggested a daily walkabout by the council to identify hotspots of poor waste management.

This would lead to “community satisfaction” in the area, which has also lodged several complaints with the councillor.

The aim of the meeting was to gather views from the public on the cleansing situation in the area.

Councillor Siddique finished: “There seems to be a distinct lack of supervision in the area assessing the quality of work and gaps in services.

“I appreciate there is a neighbourhood officer for Govanhill, it seems the officer has southside responsibilities rather than a focused overview of Govanhill.

“A daily supervision walkabout would potentially lead to an improved service and community satisfaction.

“I have collated some feedback and ideas and welcome the opportunity to meet and discuss strategies and solutions going forward.”

Cheryl McCormick, chair of Crosshill and Govahill Community Council, said: “The turn out from the community was far bigger than we had anticipated.

“The community passionately raised their concerns about the lack of cleansing services in the area.

“The community council will now relay the points raised at the meeting to MSP’s on the Govanhill Cross Party Group.

“We are still committed to continue our work with the neighbourhood cleaning manager on the issues in the area through our regular meetings with our cleansing sub group and will pressure Glasgow City Council to provide resources that are adequate for the needs of such a densely populated area.”
