A TALKING newspaper for the blind has produced its final edition after 16 years.

The East End Talking Newspaper in partnership with Glasgow Kelvin college has seen demand for the service reduce in recent years.

The weekly edition was described as a lifeline for what was happening in the community.

The talking newspaper brought updates on pieces of national and local news, as well as local information and events.

The initiative began in 2002 at the former John Wheatley College’s sound studios at Queenslie Industrial Estate before moving to a home at the sound engineering studio of Glasgow Kelvin College’s East End Campus in 2009.

Subscribers dwindled from almost 50 to 12 and the team reluctantly felt it was time to wind up the charity.

Before closing the newspaper made a donation of £1000 to Glasgow Kelvin College which the college intends to use to help resource and support its community learning programme.

Alan Sherry,College Principal, said:“We are privileged to have been able to host the East End Talking Newspaper team over the years and are delighted to accept their very kind donation. It has been a pleasure to be involved with each of the individuals on the team and we hope they will remain friends of the College.”
