A GLASGOW student union is set to offer lids on all drinks in a bid to crackdown on drinks being spiked.

Strathclyde University is understood to have ordered up to 1,000 lids as part of a new trial aimed at keeping city students safe while on nights out.

The move was sparked by a Facebook group dubbed Girls Against Spiking, who are keen to introduce a "sippy cup system" across Glasgow.

Thousands have praised the university for the decision but, the group insists it won't stop until every union is on board with the plan.

In a Facebook post, the group said: "Following the amazing work of the University of Strathclyde Union bar deciding to start using the lids, I've been thinking about the next steps! So I've had a few suggestions from you girls about contacting other unions to try and get them to do the same.

"So far I've had suggestions for QMU and GCU but I'll get in touch with all of them!

"I'm assuming there's a lot of students on this page and I want to strategically contact venues that you all visit the most frequently so I think this is probably a good place to start!

"Please let me know your thoughts on it because you've all got amazing ideas and suggestions and this page is about you and not me! Sending you all lots of love, stay safe."

The lids will be entirely eco-friendly and are set to be put into use as a soon as they are delivered to the city centre educator.
