A GLASGOW councillor has revealed she suffered a miscarriage.

Councillor Rhiannon Spear told her fans on social media in a bid to 'smash the stigma' around miscarriage.

The politician, who represents the Greater Pollok, took to Twitter.

She said: "I've just had it confirmed that my wee pregnancy has failed and I will have a miscarriage.

"We told folk about the pregnancy early because we wanted to smash the stigma around miscarriage and in experiencing one myself now, that is exactly what I want to do.

"If you know someone who knows about my pregnancy please share the news, it is exactly why I am posting here.

"Rhys and I are coping incredibly well, the NHS our family and friends have been solid support in the last few days.

"It's horrible news but very common. One in five women experience miscarriage and we do not talk about it enough. I knew this going into my pregnancy.

"Women suffer in silence over many, many things miscarriage is just a small part of that."

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was among the first to offer her support to the councillor.

Ms Sturgeon previously spoke of the painful experience of losing a baby in 2011.

She said: "Sending love - I know how you’ll be feeling just now so take care."
