Glasgow's most notorious prison is set to be shut down under new plans.

HMP Barlinnie in Riddrie will be put up for sale and replaced with a purpose-built super jail.

The Scottish Government has given the go-ahead for the £100m plans.

Two of the three are within the city boundaries while the other is on the outskirts.

Consultants are believed to have spent the last four years looking for a suitable location for the new jail, which will be called HMP Glasgow, according to the Sunday Mail.

The new prison will be double the size of Barlinnie which is described as 'constantly overcrowded'.
