AN English teacher working in Glasgow has been told she will be reported and not to return to school after refusing to cross picket lines on Tuesday.

Victoria Wainwright, 30, who has taught at Eastbank Academy in Shettleston since May, did not attend work during strike action, saying she felt uncomfortable doing so.

Later, she allegedly received a call from the school’s depute head, who said she should not return and “would not get another job in Glasgow”.

The council had sent out guidance to staff on the eve of the action informing staff they “may face disciplinary action” if they opted to strike.

However, Ms Wainwright, who is on a contract until December, has said she is shocked at the response.

She added: “A lot of teachers were quite clearly not comfortable crossing.

“Teachers choosing not to cross pickets can make a huge difference. I appreciate the school won’t be happy but it’s my right to refuse to cross, especially in a school where lack of support can be a safety issue.

“The call I received was quite threatening and was not consistent with what we had been told. I believe I have been treated very harshly.”

A council spokeswoman said: “A meeting has been arranged with the headteacher and HR at the end of this week to discuss correct protocol procedures and attendance management issues.”
