A LANDLORD has been allowed to continue renting her property out despite a string of fire-safety hazards being found.

Dodgy fire doors, broken windows and piles of rubbish were found inside Sarah-Jane Ramsay’s flat on Willowbank Crescent, in Woodlands, when Scottish Fire and Rescue inspectors visited in June this year.

Fire risk assessment records were “poorly maintained” as the landlord made attempts to move her family to Uganda.

And when the property was re-visited by officials just two months later they found that the “housekeeping issues were worse” than in the previous inspection.

The problems were only fixed this month as a new property management team prepared to take over the running of the three-bedroom flat.

Glasgow’s licensing committee vice-chairman John Kane said: “It is a concern that during the period of this chaos there was people living in this property.

“We need some firm assurance that this property is going to be managed properly going forward.”

Kirsty Smith, who will now manage the property while Ms Ramsay is in Uganda, pleaded with the committee to allow the landlord to renew her houses in multiple occupation (HMO) licence.

Explaining the situation, Ms Smith said: “The landlord knows these issues ran far longer than they should have.

“A lot of it was to do with the tenants. There was a lot of rubbish in the kitchen. Those tenants have moved out and new tenants are in.

“The landlord has been heavily involved with keeping the tenants up to speed and making sure it is clean and tidy and fire safety certification is up to speed.

“The tenants are adhering to fire training they were given by me; the place is clear and the management has been completely transformed.”

Glasgow City Council’s HMO officers confirmed that the problems have all now been fixed and that no complaints had been made.

And after committee members were split 3-3 on whether to grant or continue the application, chairman Alex Wilson decided that the licence should be given for a restricted one-year period.

Ms Ramsay was also issued with a warning regarding her future management of the property.
