A south side community are celebrating their hard work in transforming a much-loved community garden.

Following council cutbacks, Kingsley Rose Gardens, beside Hampden Bowling club, had become overgrown.

Workers were unable to dedicate time to maintaining the flower beds, which are a popular feature of the greenspace.

To help get things back on track, the local community took over a flower bed each.

Now a year on, there is cause of celebration as Kingsley Rose Gardens are flourishing once again.

Hampden Bowling Club Treasurer, Graeme Brown, described the transformation as proof of how "the Council and the community can work together".

He added: "Both Kingsley Gardens and Hampden Bowling Club make up the footprint of the World's First International Football Ground - the first Hampden.

"It's great to see that both are on a mission to make sure they both continue to show off the history that sits underneath them."

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: "The local community deserves great credit for the work they have done at Kingsley Gardens

“This was an open space where we couldn’t continue to commit the level resources needed to maintain all of the flower beds to a good standard.

“However, the local community has pulled together and made an excellent job of looking after the gardens.

“We have supported the local group with tools and materials and we have also undertaken basic maintenance such as grass cutting and weeding.

“We are happy to keep working with the community so they can make the most of their local, public spaces.”
