IT was a dark and chilly Wednesday evening outside and the Moll was looking glum and hungry.

It was a look I knew well and it meant the pressure was on to come up with somewhere to eat that is both filling and in pleasant surroundings.

There was a place I had been wanting to check out since it re-opened after a long closure.

Before revealed my suggestion of some canalside dining, I decided to dispense with the Amsterdam or Venice guessing game teasing.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: A real treat to dine at this Indian - we were in curry heaven

I’d tried that old gag before and failed. And Tec learns fast.

So, I suggested we check out Lock 27 on the Forth and Clyde Canal north of Anniesland Cross.

It re-opened its doors after a refurbishment around the turn of the year and I wanted to see how it measured up.

We headed up Crow Road as far as you can go before stopping at the canal.

Inside, the place has been completely ripped out and remodelled with the bar moved from the centre of the pub to along part of the back wall giving much more room for floor space and more tables.

It is now laid out more with food in mind and with an extensive and interesting pub menu to go with it.

We shared some nachos to start which would equally work well as a snack with a drink for those with less ravenous appetites.

Then for the main course and from all the usual pub standards, and a bit more besides, the Moll opted for the halloumi fajitas. I had the cod and chips.

The fajitas came sizzling to the table adding a bit of theatre. The big strips of halloumi with peppers, served with dips and salad went down a treat.

The fish was chunky in a crispy batter served with hand cut chips and mushy peas. Simple but good. Not everywhere gets fish and chips right, but was a good one.

No complaints. The staff were a friendly young team providing decent service.

Prices were also very reasonable given the place has obviously had a bit of cash spent on it.

I had been in this place not long before it closed down and it was looking tired.

It has now been brought back to life with modern bright décor. It’s definitely suitable for families and has seating that can be configured to accommodate larger groups or smaller, with intimate window tables looking out on to the canal.

When the weather is fine during the day time there are still the tables outside, which will once again be popular with walkers and cyclists.

Lock 27 was missed by many during its absence. But now it has returned. renewed and refreshed.

Welcome back.
