A MAN who chased a gang of youths through a street with an axe has been jailed for 12 months.

Jack Andrews, 21, was filmed wielding the weapon at the teenagers in Parkhead last December. He was angry because they were smoking in his grandmother’s close.

The video, used in evidence at Glasgow Sheriff Court, showed Andrews repeatedly run at the group.

The court heard the youths threw an axe at him which Andrews picked up and chased them with.

In the video, Andrew’s grandmother is seen standing between her grandson and the youths in a bid to settle the situation.

Mr Andrew’s defence lawyer John Kilcoyne said: “The axe was thrown at him and he went towards the youths.

“He found himself in this position as his gran complained about the youths, he was trying to get them away from his her close.”

Andrews admitted possession of an offensive weapon and acting in a threatening or abusive manner whilst brandishing the axe.

Sheriff Johanna Johnston told him: “You shouldn’t have acted like that and you did it in broad day light.

“People do not go about welding an axe and there will be a consequence for it and you will pay the price for this.”
