Police have now appealled for witnesses to come forward after the incident.

One eyewitness said: “I don’t know the family. I just stay close and saw someone standing crying. She was in hysterics at the door. I don’t really know anything - it’s just tragic. It’s just really, really sad.”

Another neighbour living next door to the flat told the Evening Times: “These windows are very dangerous, they push right open. I think they do have a safety catch but, if it’s not on, they go wide open.

“It’s a bit scary, considering I’ve got a child. I can’t believe it. I hope she’s okay.”

Police remain stationed at the scene.

He added: “As such, we are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the child fall or anyone who has seen her at the window prior to her falling.

“A number of people were in the area at the time and came to the assistance of the girl and it is important we speak to all of these people. Therefore, if any of these people left before speaking to police, we urge them to contact police immediately.
