THE SNP is asking supporters to donate cash to help persuade voters in a new push for independence.

It wants to raise funds to send out campaign material to every house in Scotland.

Following Nicola Sturgeon’s announcement of legislation to prepare for a second referendum by 2021, deputy leader, Keith Brown, issued a rallying call to support a new fundraising effort.

He said the First Minister’s announcement gave “new impetus” to the independence campaign.

And he added that after the European Parliament elections on May 23 the focus would be on “building a majority for independence.”

On the yes.scot website, Mr Brown said the plan is to “distribute an independent Scotland: Household Guide to every household – all 2,460,000 of them.”

He added: “To achieve that, I am asking you to join me in making a donation to this specific project.”

He said the guide would focus on Scotland’s economic potential as an independent country.

In an accompanying video Nicola Sturgeon knocks on a Yes campaigner's door and tells him.

"You know we can do so much better than this. Go and get your jacket. It’s time.”

Labour said the fundraiser shows the announcment is more about the SNP than Scotland.

A spokesman said: "This film lets the cat out the bag. Nicola Sturgeon’s announcement today has nothing to do with reaching out to the country – it is about motivating the base and trying to wring some cash out of them for party funds."
