Ali Price was last night presented with the 2018/19 McCrea Financial Services player of the season prize at the Glasgow Warriors annual awards dinner as the Scotland scrum-half continued to enjoy a very different end to his season compared with that of a year ago.

Back then, with Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill making no secret of his desire to take one of Glasgow’s three high class scrum-halves along the M8, Price looked like the favourite to go when head coach Dave Rennie questioned his conditioning on his return from Six Nations duty with Scotland and he dropped out of the selection picture.

Even after the departure of formere international captain Henry Pyrgos to the capital, young George Horne looked set to become the Warriors first choice No.9, but Price’s response to the challenge saw him re-establish himself in the Scotland starting line-up by the end of this season’s Six Nations, as well as at Glasgow.

One of eight players short-listed by the Warriors coaching staff, he won the vote for the player of the year award held among supporters and is now eyeing the prospect of rewarding them with what would be the biggest day in their team’s history should they get to the Pro14 final at Celtic Park at the end of this month.

“It’s a huge honour to win this award and I’d like to thank the supporters who voted for me,” said the 25-year-old.

“We’re excited to be in the Guinness Pro14 semi-final, but we have a lot of hard work ahead of us over the next few weeks.

“It would be amazing to play in the Guinness Pro14 Final at Celtic Park later this month in front of our own supporters, but our focus is on preparing for the semi-final in a couple of weeks.”

The esteem in which club stalwart Rob Harley is held within the camp was meanwhile marked by his selection as both the Denholm Oilfield Services player’s player of the season award and The Famous Grouse coaches award.

At the other end of the experience scale, 21-year-old Stafford McDowall received the Land Rover young player of the season award at the end of a campaign that saw him called into the Scotland training squad
