A BID to restore derelict tennis courts in one of Glasgow’s most deprived areas has been boosted by a £50k donation from the Judy Murray Foundation.

The tennis coach has got behind a plan to restore the five red ash courts in Maryhill Park as part of a her efforts to increase participation in the sport.

Judy is understood to have announced the funding at a meeting with Glasgow Life, the council, SportScotland and Friends of Maryhill Park, that was led by local SNP MSP Bob Doris.

Mr Doris said it was now hoped additional funding can be secured for resurfacing and re-fencing improvements which could see the courts open to the public by the Summer.”

He said: “My thanks to Judy Murray. She has not only been hands on with this project but crucially has also able to identify a potentially significant financial contribution.

“The challenge is now for other partners to leverage in financial support also.

“Our next step is for the Friends of Maryhill Park to work closely with Glasgow Life and the Judy Murray Foundation to develop a delivery plan which will achieve our vision.

“We are keen to see the courts used this summer by the community and for the physical improvements desired to be achieved as soon as possible.

“A Maryhill Community Tennis Club where families have either previously not had the opportunity to play tennis, or have not been able to afford to play is now an achievable goal.”
