A memorial bench in honour of the equal pay claimants who died during the long fight has been unveiled outside the City Chambers.

Women who have spent the past twelve years fighting for an equal pay settlement with Glasgow City Council raised more than £5000 to memorialise 163 of their lost colleagues.

Francis Stojilkovic, equal pay campaigner who led the fundraising initiative for the bench, said: “There are so many of our colleagues that have been to the marches and protests, but passed away and are not here to receive the payments."

“It’s a sad day as we stood with them fighting, but now they aren’t here. At least now we’ve this to keep the memory alive their kids and grandkids can come and know about the history behind it,” she added.

The event was attended by the families and friends of those that did not live to see the pay settlement from the council which will be paid out to 14,000 workers.

One of the campaigners present, Rosie McGowan, said: “The bench is for everyone, it gives us all comfort.

“It will give me comfort, I am only in town twice a week and I plan to come and sit here and think of my family friend and close pal that I lost.”

Earlier this year the Glasgow women's equal pay victory was recognised with an Evening Times Editor's award. The special team award was presented as part of our Scotswoman of the Year event.
