EVENING Times readers have reacted to the news that St Andrew’s in the Square is to close, alongside Cafe Source.

Couples who booked the wedding venue were left “devastated” after being told that the venue was to close after falling into “significant” rent arrears.

Glasgow Building Preservation Trust, which owns St Andrew’s in the Square, said it has been left with “no option” but to terminate the lease.

The church is also sublet to the Cafe Source restaurant, which provides the catering for weddings and has now taken over the running of the venue until it ceases trading on February 2 next year.

Paul Laurie, Director of Cafe Source Ltd, said: “As Sub-Tenants of the building we, Cafe Source Ltd, tried to negotiate a new lease directly with the owners of the building – GBPT.

“Unfortunately, due to the costs associated with the operation and maintenance of the building, an agreement to extend that use beyond 2nd February 2020 has not been reached.

“We at Cafe Source are all very sorry and are devastated that, after 19 years of running a family business, we will no longer be able to trade.”

Couples who had been married at the venue were quick to react with Myra Law writing: Married here 1971 when it was a church. Such a beautiful building.”

Carolyn Deacon said: “Just a pity they couldn't honour wedding bookings already made for next year and just not take any more bookings from now on. Couples being left to find alternative venues with not much notice is a very unsatisfactory situation.

Robin Carmichael added: “What a shame, Neal Roleston and I had our Civil Partnership here 12 years ago, such a lovely venue and the service from cafe source was superb, will be sorry to see it close.”

Karen Lynch commented saying: “Such a shame. Hope it’s up and running again soon. Was lucky to have our wedding there in August. Would have been devastated if that hadn’t happened.

Janine Reid said she the news was hard to believe saying: “Can’t believe it. Beautiful building and cafe source Food was delicious but maybe just the downstairs location. Not sure that many people knew of it but can’t believe it’s the wedding venue also.

Cafe Source also confirmed the news on their own Facebook page with one user writing: "Gutted. A lovely restaurant with great food and friendly service. Will be missed”

Another user wrote: “So upset never ever had a bad meal and staff are lovely”

A number of hotels and businesses have reached out those impacted by the planned closure of the wedding venue.
