THE NEW leader of the Glasgow Conservative group hopes the administration will become the first Scottish council to support the government’s social mobility pledge.
Councillor Thomas Kerr is confident the members of his group will back his plan to bring a motion before the next full council which will ask the local authority to play a crucial role in boosting social mobility within the council.
By agreeing to the pledge, the council would be committed to promoting talent from all backgrounds while improving social mobility.
The document states: “Britain should be a country where you can get on in life, regardless of your background.
“Improving social mobility is a defining challenge for us as a nation. We have talent spread evenly across this great country, but opportunity isn’t.
“Businesses, with the prosperity and careers they create for people, are key to improving social mobility.”
Mr Kerr hopes members from all political parties will agree with his proposal next week.
He said: “ If the motion is successful we would be the first council in Scotland to get on board.
“I am really passionate about this.”
