SEVEN men in Glasgow have been reported to prosecutors for psychological abuse since ground-breaking new laws were introduced.

The Scottish act covers not just physical abuse, but psychological and emotional treatment and coercive and controlling behaviour, where abusers isolate victims from loved ones or control their finances.

Today we can exclusively reveal nine domestic abuse cases have been raised for criminal proceedings in the city since the legislation came into place – including seven for the new offence.

Two were reported under existing laws, while a further two cases remain under consideration.

The Crown confirmed prosecutors in Ballater Street have received 11 reports under Section 1 of the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) 2018 Act since the April 1.

All cases were men, and none of them were female.

Anne Marie Hicks, the national procurator fiscal for domestic abuse, said: “Scotland’s ground-breaking new legislation, introduced on April 1 represents a highly significant step forward in tackling domestic abuse.

“The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) take a rigorous approach to crimes of domestic abuse and we are committed to prosecuting these crimes effectively and appropriately using all of the tools at our disposal.

“The number of reports we have received so far is encouraging and I hope this will provide victims with greater confidence to report all forms of abusive behaviour.

“COPFS will continue to work closely with Police Scotland, and other partners, including Scottish Women’s Aid, Rape Crisis Scotland and ASSIST, to tackle and prevent domestic abuse and we strongly encourage anyone who has been a victim of any such offending to report this to the police and seek support.”

More than 500 COPFS staff have been trained in the new law.
