A TINY fox had to be rescued after falling down an uncovered manhole in Glasgow.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity The Scottish SPCA was alerted to the cub on May 10 by a concerned member of the public who noticed the trapped animal near Kempsthorn Crescent, Crookston.

Senior animal rescue officer Jan Toraman described how the young fox “had no chance of getting out himself.”

She added: “We were made aware of the fox after being notified by a vigilant passer-by. They had noticed the cub and phoned our animal helpline.

“The young animal was stuck down the manhole, 7-8ft down, so he had no chance of getting out himself.

“The hole was full of rubbish, dumped items and was very dirty. A colleague and I tried to clear the way but the debris was heavy and difficult to move.

“On the initial visit, I couldn’t see the fox so we lowered a trap down and left it there.

“He had potentially been trapped all day so would have been in distress.

“A local resident monitored the trap every two hours and phoned to notify us when the fox was contained.

“We took the cub to our National Wildlife Rescue Centre where it will receive any necessary treatment before being released back into the wild.

“We are very grateful to the member of the public who alerted us to the fox and to the local resident for monitoring the trap for us, they were a huge help in the successful rescue of the fox.”
