THOUSANDS of runners are set to take to Glasgow Green for a record breaking 10K race this weekend.

Almost 2,100 athletes have entered the Babcock Shettleston series, which began on May 9 in Helensburgh and continues last Thursday in Dumbarton, with all four men and women's winners expected to compete in the east end on Sunday.

Weynay Ghebresilassie, the Shettleston Olympian who represented his birth country Eritrea in the London Games, will defend his series record of 29minutes and 32 seconds, which he set in winning the Babcock Helensburgh 10k.

He is likely to be facing GB International Luke Traynor, who ran the second fastest ever time on the Dumbarton course of 29 minutes and 55 seconds, and Scottish Cross-Country Champion, Adam Craig who came second in Helensburgh.

Organisers say Lewis Raeburn of Shettleston looks "unstoppable" as the 18-year-old sets out in pursuit of the overall series title after finishing third in both of the opening two races.

Last year’s champion Katie White, from Garscube, and Rio Olympic marathon runner Sonia Samuels, who is travelling north from her Loughborough base, will also go head to head.

The event will get underway at 10am on the riverside driveway near the Boathouse, while changing facilities can be found at the Glasgow Green Football centre.
