Part of the former Meat Market site in Glasgow's East End could be turned into hundreds of new flats.

Plans have been submitted to build 250 mid-market apartments for rent on land at the junction of Duke Street and Bellgrove Street.

There would be 252 flats in total - 79 with one bedroom and 173 with two bedrooms and 20 of the ground floor flats would be wheelchair accessible.

A commercial unit is also proposed, at the Duke Street and Bellgrove Street corner.

There would be 130 car parking spaces and storage for 318 bikes.

An application submitted to Glasgow City Council states: "This is an exciting opportunity to develop a housing-led proposal on a key site to the east of the city centre assisting Glasgow City Council in realising their ambitions for the wider Meat market masterplan."

The development would have frontages along Duke Street and Bellgrove Street, with a central avenue framing views of the former Eastern District Hospital and the Meat Market sheds.

Developers said the site provides an 'opportunity to further enhance the link between the city centre, Merchant City, Strathclyde University, Collegelands and Calton Barras and the wider east end'.

It adds: "As part of the Meat Market Masterplan, the site is covered by the City Deal Glasgow scheme aiming to regenerate several sites across Glasgow

"This is focussed on the upgrading of large areas of Glasgow to bring them back into use by creating infrastructure, offices, jobs and houses."

The application will now go before Glasgow City Council planning.
