A GLASGOW woman received an £8,000 rebate after she challenged the local authority over her council tax band.
The homeowner was one of many Scots who have clawed back an estimated £5 million in council tax refunds after questioning the banding assigned to their city homes.
The Daily Mail reported yesterday that as many as 40,000 more could be eligible for paying over the odds for years. The newspaper also says that nearly 3,000 Scots have already challenged the tax bands for their homes over the past five years - and successfully had them lowered.
The woman, whose Glasgow location was not given, had her council tax reclassified from an E to D band. She will now save more than £400 a year in charges.
The rebates are among hundreds of examples posted on a council tax forum on TV personality Martin Lewis' advice expert Moneysavingexpert.com
James Roberts, political director of the TaxPayers Alliance campaign group, told the newspaper: "It's always nice to bank a little cash back from the taxman - but such large adjustments shouldn't be necessary.
"Council tax rates are skyrocketing across the UK, so there's a real danger of paying well over the odds. This yet another symptom of our unstainable council tax system, which is in dire need of reform."
Steve Nowottny, of MoneySavingExpert.com, added: "You can check and challenge your council tax banding in 10 minutes at no cost. If successful not only could you slash what you pay now, you could get a backdated rebate."
Earlier this year, we reported that council tax in Glasgow was to go up by three percent.
