MINDLESS thugs attacked firefighters trying to do their job in Glasgow's East End.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue crews were called to Garthamlock on Tuesday night following a fire report.

The hero firefighters, however, had to call in the cops when the gang of young people began throwing stones at them as they were trying to put out the blaze. The thoughtless yobs were attacking the firefighters from a wooded area on Darnaway Avenue.

Jim Hymas, local senior officer, said: "This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and not only prevents our crews from bringing any emergency to a safe and swift conclusion but it can impact on our emergency service colleagues including the police when they have to escort us at the scene.

“This cannot be condoned in any shape or form.

“We will work to identify those responsible and we will pass that intelligence to our police partners.”

A force spokeswoman said: "It was about 8.15pm on Tuesday, July 2, fire officers were attempting to attend a fire in Darnaway Avenue when they were hit by objects from a number of youths in the area.

"An investigation is underway to identify those involved and enquiries are ongoing."
