A probe has been launched by cops after a man drove "full pelt" into the River Clyde.

The motor was driven into the river at Dock Street, Clydebank, at around 9.35pm on Monday night.

Police scrambled to the scene alongside fire crews but were unable to find anyone in the car, reports our sister title the Clydebank Post.

A man, 33, later flagged down a taxi and told the driver he had swam across the river from Clydebank to Renfrew.

Officers confirmed the incident and told how the man was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment.

He was later released.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "Enquiries are continuing."

One eyewitness said he called police when he saw the man drive "full pelt" into the water when police arrived.

The source claimed to have spotted the driver hesitantly driving up to the water numerous times before reversing until he plunged into the water.

The witness said: "He just went for it."
