A thug who pounced on an OAP as she made her way to church has been jailed over an attempted robbery.

Steven Coupar grabbed 81-year-old Selina Crinean in Cambuslang's Main Street earlier this year and attempted to wrestler her bag from her.

Prosecutor Lauren Staunton told the court how Coupar, 25, had approached Ms Crinean to ask the time.

She said: "Mr Coupar continued to walk close and so she held her handbag tighter.

“He went towards the bag straps and tried to pull it away for her.”

Coupar ran from police who were nearby but was arrested that afternoon.

Ms Crinean was shaken by the attack, but not injured.

Sheriff Martin Jones QC said: “This was a serious offence on an 81-year-old woman walking to church.

“You attempted to rob her on the street and as you have a record for violence, custody is necessary.”

Coupar pled guilty and was locked up for 18 months.
