A MAN smashed the door of his innocent neighbours with a sword in a case of mistaken identity.

Rod McCluskey stormed up to the home of Matthew and Melissa Armstrong in Glasgow's Cardonald in February this year.

A sheriff heard the 38 year-old had earlier been attacked and "foolishly" went to the Armstrongs to "get to the bottom of it".

The couple were left shaken after McCluskey then struck their front door with a one-metre sword.

He ended up being held by police and was jailed for two years and nine months at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

McCluskey pled guilty to possession of a sword as well as recklessly destroying property.

The court heard McCluskey had earlier been assaulted by a sword-wielding gang.

He managed to grab the weapon from the mob before passing out in the street.

A bleeding McCluskey then came to and decided to go to the Armstrongs' who had nothing to do with the attack.

His lawyer Craig Grimes told the court McCluskey acted “foolishly and criminally”.

He added: “When he woke up he said he saw shapes and wanted to get to the bottom of it.

“He goes to the neighbours’ house and smashes the front door panel.

“After he realised he did something wrong, he stopped.”

McCluskey, now of the city's Govan, already had previous convictions for violence and being in possession of a knife.
