This is the shocking moment a caravan erupted into a fireball in a quiet Hamilton street.

Residents in Townhill Road were woken to distressing scenes early this morning as emergency crews battled to tackle the blaze.

Gail Chalmer, a local resident, filmed the moment as worried families watched on.

No-one was injured in the fire, which police are treating as "suspicious".

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed: "Officers were called to a report of a caravan on fire on Townhill Road in Hamilton around 1:40am on Thursday.

"The incident is being treated as suspicious and enquires are ongoing."

Ms Chalmers had posted the video to a local Hamilton news group.

One viewer replied: "Idiots, what if someone had decided to sleep in the caravan."

Another said: "How stupid are olk doing this, all the cars around could've exploded if they went up!"

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 1.36am on Thursday, October 17 to reports of a caravan on fire on Townhill Road, Hamilton.

“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances to the scene, and crews extinguished the fire.

“There were no reported casualties, and crews left at 2.36am.”
