Emergency crews were last night called to the scene of a huge fire at an industrial park in Clydebank amid fears 'hazardous subtances' could be affected by the blaze.

Fire crews responded to the incident at Hamilton Street after a thick plume of smoke was sent billowing into the sky over the area shortly before 6pm.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman confirmed they were responding to the incident, adding a 'specialist unit' had been dispatched to deal with any hazardous material.

At least six appliances were mobilised in an effort to tame the blaze.

Several units are understood to have caught fire, while crews have extneded the exclusion zone to curb the threat of cars parked nearby being hit by the blaze.

A heavy cordon was put in place spanning from the Farmfoods car park to the train station, although services are as yet unaffected.

Pictures show the service's environmental protection unit on site.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson confirmed to the Evening Times at around 8am that the fire has since been put out.

Crews remain on the scene to dampen down the units.

They said: "We were called to reports of a building on fire at 5.44pm on Wednesday, October 23 on Hamilton Street.

“Operations Control mobilised a number of appliances including a specialised appliance due to potential hazardous substances.

“Three crews remain in attendance this morning to dampen down the scene.

“The fire is out.

“There are no reports of any casualties and are working to make the area safe."
