Police have launched an appeal for information after a fire destroyed an animal foods factory in Clydebank.

A blaze tore through the Rumbol Products unit in Hamilton Street on Wednesday evening, sending a thick plume of black smoke high into the air.

Fire crews rushed to the scene to tackle the fire, while an environmental protection unit was also scrambled due to concerns over 'hazardous substances'.

Officers have now launched an appeal for information over the cause of the blaze.

Detective Sergeant Gordon Murray, of Clydebank CID, said: “We are eager to speak to anyone who may have seen something just before the fire broke out between 5.30 pm and 5.45pm.

“Officers are currently working with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire which is currently being treated as unexplained.

“Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident 3107 of 23 October."

Dramatic images showed a passenger plane gliding over the smoke as crews battled the flames below.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said an appliance remained on the scene while inquiries continued.

She added: “We were alerted at 5.44pm on Wednesday, October 23, to a fire within a single-storey industrial unit on Hamilton Street, Clydebank.

“Operations Control mobilised seven appliances and specialist resources to the scene, where firefighters tackled the flames externally.

“One appliance remains at the location.”
