DOG owners are being warned to be on the lookout for dangerous items while walking their pets, after doughnut-like items purposefully laced with needles were found outside Titwood Park in Polloksheilds.

Stephanie, who works at Tartan Pet Service walking customers pets, found the cruel items on the side of the pavement on Glencarin Drive while on a routine dog walk with 2 greyhounds and a whippet on Monday morning.

She said: “I never thought I would ever come across something like that. It was so brazen and shocking for who ever done it to leave it outside a children’s play park.”

Police Scotland confirmed they had received reports of the dangerous trap, and after Stephanie handed them in to Gorbals Police Station, a spokesperson confirmed that the “white substance on top” had been tested and deemed “not harmful”. The item has since been destroyed.

Stephanie said: “No matter what the crystal topping is it’s stuffed with needles left outside a children’s play park on a public street.

“I walk there regularly and I’m always passing other dog owners and parents with small children.”

Although no animals were injured, Stephanie has urged others to be on the lookout, saying: “The only safe tip is keep your dog on the leash and keep your eyes peeled.

“It’s really scary to think in the blink of an eye a dog or child can pick something up and swallow it before you can stop them.”

The incident is not an isolated one, as SSPCA confirmed that a similar situation was identified in Anderston, with dog biscuits being laced with nails found in the street in July.

A representative for SSPCA said: “If anyone suspects their animal has ingested something harmful, they should seek veterinary treatment immediately.

“Please report any information to our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999 or Police Scotland on 101.”
