Who are you?

Sam Kynoch – owner of Kynoch Boxing.

What does your business do?

We are Scotland’s biggest professional boxing management and promotions business.

We manage more than 30 Scottish boxers and promote 12 events each year throughout the country.

We also operate the Kynoch Boxing Gym on Portman Street, Glasgow – which is Scotland’s biggest boxing gym.

Where are you based?

I am based in the Kynoch Boxing Gym in Kinning Park.

The gym is an essential part of the business because it acts as a training base for many of our professional boxers and allows me to keep in the loop with the best boxing talent in Scotland as we have lots of amateur boxers using the gym.

How did you get started?

My first promotion was in a gym in which I used to coach – where we had 30 people sitting on punchbags which we had taken down.

From there I hired a nightclub and then a hotel – and things have kept growing since.

What is your background?

I have a First Class Law Degree from Glasgow University. I trained as a Solicitor with Dundas & Wilson and qualified into their Corporate department – before moving into boxing on a full-time basis.

What is your top tip?

Find something you love doing.

Remaining in legal practice would have been the safest thing for me to do but had I not taken a chance with pursuing my dream to work full-time in boxing I would always have regretted it.

And work hard. There really is no substitute for hard work.

How long has your business been running?

I started promoting boxing events in 2008 – under the SK Boxing Promotions banner. This is a white collar boxing business which is now run by my friend Scott McArthur.

I opened my gym in 2013 and I promoted my first professional boxing event in 2015.

Has anyone helped you get started and how?

I started my business with my own savings and built from a very small scale to the events which I run today.

What was your first deal?

My first promotion outside of a gym was in Silver Nightclub on Hope Street in 2009 – which has now closed down.

I remember the excitement of seeing a queue all the way down the street like it was yesterday and I still get the same buzz from running events to this day.

Where do you plan your business to be in five years time?

In five years’ time I hope that Kynoch Boxing will have even more champions signed than we do today.

We have one World Champion (Hannah Rankin) on our books and several Scottish / Celtic Champions.

Our current crop of boxers have the talent to go on to claim major titles and the Scottish amateur scene is currently very strong – which bodes well for the future of Scottish boxing and my business.
