FAMILIES who have lost loved ones through substance abuse will be able to commemorate them at a special remembrance service in Glasgow this month.

Family Addiction Support Service (FASS) a charity dedicated to helping those concerned about a person’s drug or alcohol abuse will host it’s 26th annual ecumenical service of remembrance at St Alphonsus Church on Thursday, November 21.

FASS, which is based at 123 West Street, first began in the 1980s by parents concerned about the growing drug problem in the city.

Lorraine McGoldrick, service manager, said: “This is an annual event.

“We organise the service to commemorate those who have lost their lives to drugs. We also light candles to mark every drug related death in Glasgow.

“We read out the names of people who have passed away as a result of addiction by giving family members the chance to have a loved ones name read out.”

Last year more than 200 people attended the event which lasted just over an hour.

This year the service will be lead by Canon Tom White and Rev. Peter Davige of Gallogate Parish Church.

Ms McGoldrick continued: “Everybody is welcome to come along. If they want a name read out they just need to contact the office.

“The Motherwell Diocesan Choir will attend again this year. They come and sing hymns with us every year. We are also hoping some of the councillors will come along too.”

The service will start at 7.30pm at St Alphonsus Church on London Road. Light refreshments will be served afterwards at The Lodging House Mission at 35 East Campbell Street.

For those who want a loved one’s name read out they should phone Lorraine McGoldrick on 0141 420 2050 or email info@fassglasgow.org
