THE makers behind Paesano have done it again with new restaurant SUGO.
With its official opening on Monday, the Evening Times had a sneak peek at the new authentic pasta restaurant that has taken up premises in The Herald building on Mitchell Lane.
SUGO has taken over the iconic Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed building, which was once home to our sister title when it was known as The Glasgow Herald.

The huge venue can seat up to 250 people, with a bar at 40 capacity, and is in keeping with the industrial feel of Paesano with open piping and exposed brickwork.
The neon SUGO sign is set to be one of the most Instagrammed signs this Christmas.
SUGO has a philosophy of delivering simple, fresh pasta made by hand every day.
Owner Paul Stevenson, who was previously behind The Italian Kitchen and Italian Cafe as well as Glasgow favourite Paesano, told the Evening Times: “Dishes are served using traditional methods from nine regions of Italy – Tuscany, Lazio, Emilia Romagna, Sicily, Puglia, Abbuzzo, Campania, Calabria and Umbria.
“There is no spaghetti bolognese or carbonara on the menus, because those pastas are not traditional and don’t exist in an authentic Italy. Instead it’s about the authenticity so the dishes on offer areones that are interesting and new, paired to the regions that they were from.
“The dishes start from £5, so the prices are similar to Paesano. When I started Paesano, people told me that it would never work. But it did and it just shows that its quality that wins people over, nothing else.”

The menu consists of nine mains and seasonal specials, and all the dishes focus on keeping authentic characteristics of the provenance that they come from: Campania is a simple tagliarini with olive oil, garlic, chilli and pangrattato from a tasty five pounds, whilst the most expensive special is the seasonal Tuscan special, tagliarini with black truffle.
Vegetarian options are also available, and four of the dishes can be made with vegan alternatives such as egg-free pasta so there is something in SUGO for all Glasgow diners. It’s set to be a carb-filled Christmas!
