THREE landlords have lost their bids to be entered into Glasgow’s register of private landlords due to the standard of their properties.

Glasgow councillors turned down applications from landlords Atiq Ahmed, Syed Hussain and Oleg Aliev.

The licensing committee heard how Mr Ahmed continued to let a property despite a closing order, meaning a property can no longer be used as living accommodation, being issued. “The tenants were already there and wouldn’t leave,” Mr Ahmed said. However, licensing chairman Alex Wilson, pictured, said: “It is up to you as a responsible person to make sure the property is vacated.”

He also criticised the condition of the property, which had exposed electrical wiring.

Councillor Rhiannon Spear said: “You said you had kids in this property. Our officers had to notify you that your gas boiler wasn’t working and hot water wasn’t available to children in a property you manage.”

She continued: “You’re almost acting annoyed that tenants have legal rights.”

Syed Hussain had his bid refused due to a number of issues with the property. “There’s virtually a whole alphabet worth of issues, we’re only missing W,X,Y and Z,” Mr Wilson said.

He argued he hadn’t been able to access the property, saying: “I make contact with the tenant but he didn’t allow me access.”

Mr Wilson said he could have called law enforcement. “You have a statutory duty,” he added.

Mr Aliev was also rejected due to the condition of his property, with issues including a missing window pane. He said previous tenants had destroyed the building and a family had moved in without his knowledge. “I haven’t been receiving rent for a year,” he added.
