KIDS at an Ibrox nursery have handed over Christmas gifts to children at Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Children after coming up with the heartwarming idea all by themselves.

Little Stars Nursery in Ibrox launched the Christmas campaign after kids came to staff with the idea of buying Christmas presents for children who were less fortunate.

Melissa Gillespie works in the nursery and described the day the kids came up with the idea: “We were all amazed for kids that young to come away with that. We kept asking them if they still wanted to do it, thinking it might have just been something they said on a whim but they were still so up for it after weeks had passed.”

The nursery hosted a ‘curry karaoke’ for parents, friends and family in late November to raise money for a shopping trip to buy the presents for the children.

Melissa said: “We raised over £500, it was incredible – they got to raise money and have some delicious food too, I think some went away with a doggy bag! Their parents were so proud of them – we even got a call from members of a little girl’s family who live down South to congratulate the kids too.”

The kids then got to go shopping to choose what they think the boys and girls in the hospital would want from Santa – including some colourful plasters “to help them feel better”.

The children visited the hospital, located in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, on Wednesday morning and Melissa described just how excited the kids were to handover their presents: “They were so excited, it was all they were talking about for days before, telling us all about how they wanted to meet the little boys and girls in the hospital and give them presents to help them feel better.”

The kids were also visited by Santa on their trip to the hospital, who thanked them all for their selfless work in helping the patients and gifted them all a special notebook to thank them.

Melissa said: “It’s been fantastic and the plan is definitely to carry on with the idea next year, and hopefully further down the line.

“As nursery staff, everyone thinks that their kids are the best but I think this really proves that our kids are something special.”
