A Rod Stewart superfan got a chance to meet her idol in the flesh - and present him with an award for his run of shows at the Hydro in Glasgow.

Helen Gibson was selected through a social media competition by SSE to make the presentation to the 74-year-old rocker backstage on Saturday night.

Her son Jamie surprised her by telling her about the meet and greet days with the show.

Rod's recent stint of three nights at the Finnieston venue plus previous performances in the six years since the Hydro opened earned him the Ultimate Performer Award.

The accolade, the first of its kind, recognises Rod's four-night stint in 2013 as well as a further six shows since.

Helen, who travelled from Aberdeen to the show with son Jamie, daughter Megan and daughter-in-law Michelle, said: "I can’t quite believe what’s happened.

"Rod’s music has been such a big part of my life so to get the chance to meet him and present this special award is just a dream come true.

"I was shaking a little but Rod was really nice and calmed me down right away.

"His shows are always amazing and I just hope he comes back to the Hydro another ten times at least!"

The moment was extra special for Helen who tragically lost her partner Alec. She didn't have much opportunity to see the star live while looking after Alex who became ill. When he lost his battle with illness, she said music became a means of escape for the family and a trigger for many fond memories.

Glasgow Times:

Rod said: “I can’t believe that was our tenth show here already. I’ve got fond memories of opening the venue and the fans have continued to come back and support me since, so it’s very special to receive the Ultimate Performer Award from SSE.”

Colin Banks, Head of Sponsorship and Reward at SSE, added: “To see a live performer of Rod Stewart’s stature open The SSE Hydro was very special.

"To see him come back to perform another six times in his own, unmistakeable style has been amazing.

"SSE is thrilled to honour Rod with this very special SSE Live Award for his incredible record at the venue.

"It was also hugely rewarding to have Helen, a lifelong fan, backstage to make the presentation ahead of the show – a moment she will never ever forget.”

The SSE Live Awards will return in January 2020, as fans of both the Hydro and The SSE Arena, Wembley vote to crown the best acts at each venue after a breath-taking year of live entertainment.

Previous winners of The SSE Live Awards include Kevin Bridges, Paolo Nutini, Andy Murray and Queen, with fans casting votes in their millions.
