A PRIVATE hire driver has been warned after amassing nine points on his licence – and then failing to tell the council.

Thomas Geraghty was allowed to renew his private hire car driver’s licence by Glasgow licensing chiefs but only for a restricted period of one year.

He had applied for another three years.

The committee heard how Mr Geraghty had committed two red light offences and had once been caught speeding.

Bailie John Kane said: “It’s not exactly what the committee wants to hear from someone driving our citizens around.”

The driver said he had no passengers in the car on any of the occasions, adding: “I didn’t think they were red lights.”

He told the committee he had been driving for 30 years and had only committed four offences. “Unfortunately” he committed three in a short period, he said.

Mr Geraghty was renewing his licence for the first time after becoming a private hire driver in January 2017.

Bailie Kane, who was chairing the committee meeting, said the driver had failed to inform the council about his offences.

“Whenever you have something like this you get in touch with us and tell us,” he added.

The applicant was asked if he had read all of the terms and conditions of his licence and admitted failing to do so.

The committee decided to renew his licence for one year, issuing him with over his future conduct and his failure to comply with the conditions of the licence.

Sajid Mahmood, who failed to appear at two hearings, had his bid for a private hire driver’s licence turned down by the councillors.

Daniel Gallagher was handed a three-year licence after providing his vehicle for inspection and supplying the relevant documents to the council.
