A good seasonal entry with an excellent trade throughout.

There were some good quality lambs forward, but also a lot of mixed types present.

THERE were pleasing entries of stock in all sections.

A fantastic entry of 25 quality cattle were in the show, which were a credit to all vendors.

Beef trade was similar to previous weeks, while cull cows were sold at much faster rates with more meat about.

Lambs and cull ewes also met excellent demand, resulting in a brisk trade.

THERE was an excellent show of cattle for late November, with pleasing numbers and a solid trade throughout again.

More buyers were present for dairy, which resulted in firmer demand.

Calves sharpened up across the board with a large crowd ringside.

Barren and cull cows (45):

A similar number of OTM cattle were on offer during the week, seeing a top price of £1043.89 (139ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 751kg from JM & A Jones, Wig.

AJ & JC Daniel, Abergwydol Farm made 130ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 736kg making £956.80.

Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £987.60 (120ppkg) for an Aberdeen Angus x weighing 823kg from TE Lewis & Son, Abergwenlas.

TH & ME & EJ Jones, Plascoch made 130ppkg for a Simmental x weighing 729kg making £947.70.

Heifers under 48 months topped at £1225.90 (190ppkg) for a heifer weighing 661kg from MM & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden.

Averages of the day were as follows: OTM Cows (34) 100.61ppkg / £656.23; Bulls Under 72 months (1) 114ppkg / £1056.78; Overall Average 107.67ppkg.

Fat cattle:

The fat cattle show was kindly sponsored by For Farmers and Briarwood Products Ltd and was judged by Jim Holding.

The champion title was awarded to JM & SM Rowlands, Dolwen.

The Limousin steer, that was also 1st prize, weighed 684kg and made 325ppkg, realising £2223.

It was bought by Rikki Lloyd Butchers, Welshpool.

The reserve Champion title also went to JM & SM Rowlands for a Limousin heifer weighing 590kg selling for 300ppkg to Rikki Lloyd.

Many thanks go to the judge and vendors on the day for their support.

The overall average of the day was 270.95ppkg.

An larger entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 194.44ppkg, with a top price of 305ppkg for the champion pen of Beltex lambs weighing 41kg making £125 from DE Morgan, Cefntwlch, selling to Rikki Lloyd Butchers, Welshpool.

A larger number of lambs forward sold to anther very good, strong competitive trade throughout with a large number of buyers present ensuring keen bidding on all weights and grades.

The sale began with the Christmas show lambs, which were of outstanding quality and sold to a tremendous trade.

Many thanks go to the judge James Gittins and all vendors and purchasers who helped make a success of the show and sale.

In the commercial lambs, all weights and grades were in good demand, especially the better bred, well fleshed lambs.

Lighter weight lambs sold to a very strong trade for both the hill and better bred lambs, with again some of these again going back out on farm as store lambs.

Export and supermarket weight lambs also sold strongly with plenty of pens selling above 200ppkg.

Heavy weight lambs continue to meet good competitive bidding with these averaging very nearly 190ppkg and being as well sold as any.

Any over fat lambs were the only types that were difficult to sell.

Hopefully trade will continue at these price levels and gradually improve so vendors are encouraged to keep drawing and selling well fleshed lambs.

Cull ewes (1855):

There was a very similar entry of cull ewes that met a strong trade once again from start to finish.

A total of 11 individual buyers were present once again, leading to competitive bidding throughout.

Generally, the ewes present during the week were not as strong as the previous week, however, the average of £56.80 was very similar to a week earlier reflecting the strong trade on all types.

The best Texel x ewes sold between £85-£100, Mules £65-£75, Welsh £55-£65.

There was a shortage of the very best Texel and Texel x ewes during the week and the strongest trade was on these types because of the shortage on offer. Top price of the day went to GM Mills, Penisaf Manledd, Fan that sold ewes for £125.

More ewes are needed each week to satisfy the demand!

Another strong show of cull rams met another good trade with an overall average of £69.49 being achieved.

A top price of the day of £107 went to GL, JS, & A Howells, Shadog Farm, Pentre Cwrt.

Texel ewes to £125; Beltex ewes to £116; Texel x Mule ewes to £100; Suffolk x ewes to £95; Mule ewes to £82; Welsh ewes to £79; Dolgellau type Welsh ewes to £51.

Store lambs:

There was a reduced number again compared to the previous week.

However, more could have been sold to vendors' advantage as trade proved very expensive.

Texel theaves to £66, £64.50 and £64; Suffolks to £63.50; Mules to £64.50 and £35; Beltex to £55; Charollais to £50 and Welsh to £59.50 and £54.

Mixed and clean Texels to £74.50, £73 and £70; Suffolks to £63; Mules to £48 and Welsh to £56.50 and £50.

Wether Texels to £61; Suffolks to £70 and Welsh to £74 and £52.50.

Texel tups to £75.50, £74 and £70.50; Speckled to £63 and £50; Mules to £66, £64 and £52; Welsh to £70, £55.50 and £55, and Lleyn to £48.

Mixed and tups to £55 for Suffolks.

Cows and calves:

The 8th annual production sale of in-calf heifers on behalf of Messrs DI Roberts & Son, Stingwern took place on Christmas fatstock day once again this year in front of a packed ring.

There were some fantastic heifers on offer as ever from Stingwern, which lead to an overall average of £2,255.

Topping the trade at £3,050 was a British Blue x heifer born May 2017, in

calf to Woodhouse Custer and due in January/February.

At £2,600 was another British Blue heifer in calf to Woodhouse Custer.

A Limousin x British Blue heifer again in calf to Custer sold at £2,650.

A Pure Limousin heifer born April 2017 and in calf to Stingwern John sold at £2,380, whilst a Pedigree Limousin heifer, Stingwern Nancy, in calf to Garyvaughan Noble sold for £2,350.

A Limousin x heifer made £2450. A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows.

£2500+ - 3 Lots; £2400-2500 – 5 Lots; £2300-2400 - 9 Lots; £2200-2300 – 7 Lots; £2100-2200 10 Lots; £2000-2100 – 5 Lots; <£2000 1 Lot.

The 2nd Production Sale from the Pedigree Glanmiheli Salers herd took place presented by G & A Powell, Glanmiheli.

Topping the trade at £1,950 three times were Glanmiheli May, Glanmiheli Magic and Glanmiheli Missy.

All were in calf to Pedigree Salers stock bull Litton Ivor.

Glanmiheli Nicola and Glanmiheli Nice sold at £1,880 apiece and again were both in calf to Litton Ivor and due in April 2020.

Included in the sale were 6 Salers x in calf heifers due in April and they sold to a top of £1,820.

Overall, the 18 Pedigree Salers and 6 Salers x heifers averaged £1,800.

From JE & JT Evans, Upper Cefnpenarth were Limousin x heifers with Limousin calves at foot and all 2-4 months back in calf which sold from £2,000 to £2,320.

Three Salers cows born 2013-2015 with young Charolais calves at foot sold from £1,650 to £1,880.
