A man is still missing after an incident on the Firth of Clyde near Gourock resulted in three people in the water last night.

Two men, one 36-year-old and a 33-year-old, were rescued from the water near Cardwell Bay by a lifeboat just after midnight on December 8.

A 55-year-old man is still missing and the search activity continues.

Greenock, Helensburgh and Kilgreggan Coastguard Rescue Team, along with Helensburgh RNLI lifeboat and the HM Coastguard helicopter from Prestwick were all sent to the scene.

Coastguards were called to the Clyde around 11.20pm on Saturday after two boats had gotten into difficulty in the area.

Police were called to the ongoing incident around 12.10am on the Sunday.

The search for the 55-year-old continued until 3am but was postponed due to the weather and darkness.

Duty controller for HM Coastguard Ben Hambling said: "We received the call around 11.20 on Saturday evening (7th) which said two boats had got into difficulty in that area.

"We have carried out an extensive search and two men have been rescued by the lifeboat.

"The search for the other man continued until just after 3am today (8th) when the weather and darkness made it too difficult to continue."

Today's search continues with the same rescue teams and the Helensburgh RNLI lifeboat but the helicopter was unable to join the search due to the weather.

Police Scotland is also involved in the continued search along with two Maritime and Coastguard Agency senior officers.

It is believed the Scottish Ambulance service is also on the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers in Greenock received reports from the Coastguard of an ongoing incident on the Firth of Clyde near Gourock around 12.10am on Sunday, 8 December, 2019.

“A 36-year-old man and a 33-year-old man were rescued from the water. A 55-year-old man is still missing.

“The search activity continues.”
