A major fire has broken out at a block of flats on the River Clyde.

Emergency services have raced to Lancefield Quay in the city centre this evening.

Massive flames are sending plumes of black smoke billowing from the building.

A neighbour who lives in the building opposite the affected block told the Glasgow Times they raised the alarm after seeing a young boy inside a flat next to the burning room.

Fire crews could later be seen taking the boy - who looked no more than eight years old - from the building, and he was still wearing his pyjamas.

“We were looking across and saw a wee face come to a window and then go away," the neighbour, who did not want to be named, said.

“I saw the firemen breaking down a door with an axe.

"It's a shame - we could see how terrified he looked."

Other residents have been evacuated from the building, and another witness said his friend, who lives in the building, is currently in the north of Scotland, and thankfully out of harm's way.

The fire service has confirmed 12 appliances are in attendance.

Some 60 firefighters are tackling the blaze.

It is understood a rest and relief centre has been set up for the affected residents.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 6.43pm on Monday, December 9 to reports of a building fire in Glasgow.

“Operations control mobilised 12 fire appliances to Lancefield Quay where officers were met by a fire on the second storey of a three-storey building.

“Crews remain on the scene and are working to extinguish the fire.

“There are no reports of any casualties.”

A number of roads have now been closed as crews continue to deal with the fire.

The council has advised that Lancefield Quay is closed between Hydepark Street and Elliot Street.

Leader of Glasgow City Council Susan Aitken tweeted: "Very relieved to hear there are no reported casualties in what looks like a very serious incident.

"Thanks must go as always to firefighters and emergency service workers. A rest centre has been established & Glasgow City Council resilience staff will be on hand to provide support."

This is a breaking story and we'll update with more information as we get it
