AN OFFICE block could be built on the former home of STV as part of a plan which would complete the redevelopment of a city centre site.

Glasgow City Council has received an application from ES Renfield Ltd requesting permission to erect an office building at the corner of Renfrew Street and Renfield Street.

A multi-million pound 300-bed hotel is currently being built on the site, next to where the proposed development would be situated.

“In 2006, the newly rebranded STV moved from their Cowcaddens base to a new, smaller building at Pacific Quay alongside the headquarters of BBC Scotland,” a planning report states.

“As a result of the move, the entire Cowcaddens site, with the exception of an extension containing The Herald and Glasgow Times newspapers, was demolished and redeveloped in 2007.”

Building the offices, alongside the new hotel, would fill the site, known as Broadway 2.

The 12-storey Maldron hotel will feature a bar, restaurant and business facilities.

Dalata Hotel Group were given the go-ahead to open the four-star hotel in February. The £30 million project is the first time the Maldron brand has ventured into Scotland, and Glasgow will become home to its flagship site within two years.

The new planning report states: “The development of the Broadway 2 site will form the final part of the redevelopment of this entire city block. In recent years, the construction of Broadway One, Citizen M hotel and the comprehensive redevelopment of the Theatre Royal have been undertaken.

“The consent for the 300-bed Maldron Hotel was granted and is due to be completed in 2021.”

Broadway One is home to Tesco Bank. The new development would include a reception area, amenity spaces, including networking and communal facilities, bike storage and changing rooms, an outdoor seating area and bike racks.

There would also be a private roof terrace.

“Office roof gardens solve the issue of office space in congested cities, creating an important extension to the work place and a connection with nature,” the report states. “The positive effects of greenery in the workplace include increased productivity and reduction of stress.”

A consultation event was held in the Citizen M hotel in April.

The report states the applicant would deliver “a high-quality development” which offers “a rare opportunity to regenerate this location”.
