DOZENS of Glasgow schools have pledged their support for our festive foodbank campaign which aims to ensure no one goes hungry in the city over Christmas.

A total of 30 primary and secondary schools have requested a delivery of our Bank.On.Us paper bags, which were also included in every copy of last Wednesday’s Glasgow Times.

The campaign aims to help ensure the city’s foodbanks are well stocked through December, when families are likely to experience increased financial pressures due to rising heating bills.

St Paul’s High School in Pollok requested 600 bags while Lochend Community High School in Easterhouse is also backing the drive.

Dozens of other businesses have also requested bags or pledged other help for the campaign.

The Forge Shopping Centre in Parkhead asked for 500 bags for shoppers while Morton’s Rolls has agreed to deliver rolls and cakes to the city’s network of around 50 foodbanks.

We are asking readers to drop a few items into the bags and take it to your nearest foodbank.

But if this isn’t possible, we have a fleet of vans ready and waiting courtesy of First Bus and City Building who will be collecting bags from a number of city centre locations including the Glasgow Times offices at 200 Renfield Street and the City Chambers.

We have already started distributing supplies to foodbanks and deliveries will continue up until December.

Volunteer Glasgow, which recruits and supports thousands of volunteers across the city, will be making sure that the foodbanks have enough helpers to deal with all the deliveries.

More than 3,600 people including 1480 children were forced to ask for emergency food parcels in Glasgow last December - the highest number in Scotland.

The Trussell Trust, which runs a network of foodbanks across the city, has warned that demand may be even greater this Christmas.

Bags can be dropped off at the Herald and Times offices at 200 Renfield Stree, Volunteer Glasgow, Abbey House (1st Floor), 10 Bothwell Street, The Wise Group at 72 Charlotte Street and The Forge Shopping centre, Parkhead.
