Fopp on Byres Road will close by the end of the month, HMV have confirmed.

The music retailer which was rescued from administration last year has stated that the closure is due to "extortionate" business rates in certain locations. The company has confirmed that two other stores across the country will also shut before the month is up.

It has been reported that new tenants are already lining up to move into the Byres Road property.

HMV has said it will be relocating to Lincoln and Plymouth, with new stores opening in both cities by the end of February.

Ten other stores are due to close later this month unless the company is able to agree new deals with landlords, HMV said:

"There are currently 10 stores where negotiations with landlords are ongoing and we are hopeful of securing new deals."

"The closures are no reflection on our superb staff and where we are not able to come to a new agreement or relocate staff within the business elsewhere, unfortunately this does mean some of our staff will lose their jobs."

The Fopp brand was founded in 1981 in Glasgow's west-end as a stall at De Courcy's Arcade before it was bought over by HMV in 2007.
