A number of Glasgow landmarks were lit up this week to show that the city supports those striving for gender equality.

The First Minister’s National Advisory Council on Women and Girls (NACWG) has challenged the people of Scotland to make a resolution that will make a difference this new year.

Landmarks across the city such as the Clyde Auditorium and Glasgow Women’s Library had the resolutions of the NACWG projected onto their exterior, to encourage the public to make a change that will help drive forward gender equality in Scotland.

The resolutions offer practical ways that everyone can do their bit to at a time when reflection and self-improvement are front of mind.

The resolutions urge members of the public to speak up for gender equality, in a number of different ways.

People can support the campaign by calling out sexist behaviour and comments, supporting women’s sport, encouraging others to check their unconscious bias, share caring responsibilities equally at home, celebrate strong women and stop criticising people's bodies and to ensure that other people's voices are heard in the gender equality conversation.

The NACWG was established to advise the First Minister on what’s needed to tackle gender inequality in Scotland.

Over the course of the past two years, it has consulted a range of stakeholders of all genders and those that don’t identify across the country, including businesses, and third sector organisations, to gather insights and evidence to create recommendations for change.

The NACWG Chair, Louise Macdonald OBE, said:

“Every January we make resolutions to make positive changes in our lives - go to the gym, eat more healthily, learn something new.

"This year we’re asking people to make an extra resolution for all women and girls, helping to create a Scotland where gender inequality is nothing more than a historical curiosity.”

The NACWG’s first report made eleven key recommendations covering everything from the legal system to childcare.

The First Minister accepted all of the recommendations and the Scottish Government pledged to take forward implementation of seven of them in the 2019-20 Programme for Government.
