More than 3,000 signatures have been collected so far on a petition that is calling on Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government to save the Egyptian Halls.

Regarded as one of Alexander 'Greek' Thomson's finest pieces of work, the category A-listed building was shortlisted by Europa Nostra as one of Europe's most endangered buildings.

The Union Street building has been left to decay for over four decades and now requires extensive repairs. It is estimated that redevelopment costs would cost between £10million and £30m.

Developer and owner Derek Souter told The Glasgow Times last year that he wanted to put years of stalled deals and disputes behind him in a bid create plans for the future of the building with Glasgow City Council.

Named 'Save Egyptian Halls', members of the public have been showing their support towards the petition on the change.org petition page. Murray Nix said:

"It is an utter disgrace that this notable piece of work of Thomson is allowed to continue deteriorating in the heart of our city".

Alison Gray said: "It’s dereliction is not only shameful for itself, but for the buildings around it. Restoration would restore the whole street."

Anne Marie McPhee added: "History should be preserved".

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “The Egyptian Halls is undoubtedly an important part of Glasgow’s architectural heritage, and we have been working with the owner for many years to support plans for its development.  We look forward to proposals which can deliver appropriate and sustainable use for this notable city centre building.”
