A CRUEL care home nurse who stole more than £7000 from a man with a learning disability has been struck off.

An inquiry was told the man managed his own finances but was unable to use an ATM or pay for shopping due to his disability so his bank card was kept in the home's safe.

Police were called when he discovered that there had been 31 withdrawals totalling £7,390 between July 25 and August 30.

Gareth Craig, a staff nurse at Monroe House in Dundee, part of Thistle Healthcare, was identified as the only person who had access to his account and it emerged during the police investigation that £6,430 had been paid into it in five separate desposits.

Craig appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court on May 3 last year and was convicted of theft. He was sentenced to a community payback order on June 5 last year and ordered to pay £1,030 of compensation to the victim.

He has now been struck off the nursing register following a recent hearing by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
