A PRIMARY school was left devastated after their outdoor classroom burned down on Saturday evening.

The outdoor classroom of Wallacewell Primary School in Robroyston caught fire around 9pm on January 18.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Services were alerted to the fire just before 9pm and two appliances were rushed to the scene.

The fire was extinguished by 9.42pm but the classroom was burned to the ground.

It has been in use since September and was well loved by the pupils at the school.

Children used the room as a playroom during playtime and before classes as well as during lesson time.

Wallacewell Primary School is appealing to businesses and organisations in the area to help them rebuild the teaching area.

Head teacher of Wallacewell Primary School, Jane Lobjoie, took to social media to appeal for any information about the incident.

She said in a Facebook post: “Some of you may know that we at Wallacewell Primary were the victim of a devastating fire last night.

“Could anyone who has CCTV or lives near the school have a wee think in case you saw anything?

“We will look at our CCTV tomorrow and face over 400 devastated children and staff.”

There were no reported casualties from the incident.

Councillor for the area Christina Cannon expressed disappointment over the incident.

She said: “My initial reaction was disappointment. I couldn’t believe someone would do such a thing to part of a primary school.

“The head teacher told me early in 2019 she intended to invest in the outdoor classroom as the kids would really enjoy outdoor learning.

“I know she and the pupils at Wallacewell were really looking forward to this being built over summer.”

The SNP councillor for Springburn/Robroyston added she intends to organise a meeting with other council members to explore the options of rebuilding the classroom.

She added: “I’m going to arrange a meeting with other elected representatives and the head teacher.

“Between us I hope to come up with a few options to look at and find a solution forward.

“Hopefully the outdoor classroom will be able to rebuilt, for the sake of the pupils. I won’t rule out any options as to how this could happen.”
